SEC Litigation Paralegal

Overall Purpose:

The litigation paralegal will work closely with, and under the immediate direction of attorneys.  This person should be able to perform essential functions of the job and will support attorneys handling government and internal investigations, securities litigation, as well as other commercial disputes.  Personal characteristics that will contribute to the success in this position are a strong work ethic, high degree of personal responsibility and accountability, robust organizational skills and attention to detail, strong writing skills and a commitment to the team.  

Essential Job Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist attorneys with litigation and enforcement actions involving the SEC and other government regulatory agencies
  • Manage large volumes of documents, including e-discovery, subpoena responses, and document productions to regulatory agencies
  • Coordinate with clients, expert witnesses and government agency staff during litigation and investigation matters
  • Support fact development, witness preparation and deposition/trial support
  • Proactively serve as the focal point for litigation team communications and centralized repository for information on project assignments and status
  • Drafts and proofs routine letters, pleadings, statements, affidavits, and/or other legal documentation as appropriate at the specific direction of attorneys
  • Assist with court filings, service of process, trial preparation, and the preparation, production and organization of legal documents and binders
  • Perform document management utilizing firm software to include Microsoft and Relativity
  • Perform legal research using PACER, Lexis-Nexis, the internet and various government agency sites
  • Assist attorneys with reviewing, organizing, and summarizing case materials
  • Proofread legal memoranda to identify and correct typographical and grammatical errors; check all citations to legal authorities and to the evidence for accuracy of citations and forms of citation consistent with The Bluebook and/or specific court requirements; verify history of cited cases
  • Work with assistants and docket to ensure that calendar system contains accurate and current information
  • Assist in preparation of matrices, charts, and spreadsheets as needed
  • Assist in preparation of privilege logs
  • Keep accurate time records for both billable and non-billable tasks

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Ability to maintain a high standard of confidentiality and discretion
  • Undergraduate degree and ABA approved paralegal certificate 
  • Minimum of five years’ experience working as a litigation Paralegal for a law firm or equivalent environment
  • Fundamental proficiency in online research and internet resources (Lexis-Nexis, Westlaw and equivalents
  • CA State and Federal Litigation skills with an excellent working knowledge of legal documents and court rules 
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple complex matters simultaneously
  • Fundamental proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook as well as use of database software such as Summation, Concordance and/or Relativity
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to communicate effectively and in a professional manner with all levels of the Firm 
  • High degree of self-directed initiative and individual judgment
  • Attention to detail, ability to balance multiple projects and strong time management skills
  • Ability to process routine daily functions while being able to resolve sensitive issues and complex assignments utilizing above average critical thinking skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and to remain calm under pressure
  • Must be able to work overtime if necessary

Physical Demand:

Lifting up to 15 pounds; kneeling, bending sometimes required.  Typing/sitting at desk for long durations at a time. 

Salary:

The salary wage range that we expect to pay for this position is from $90,000 - $110,000/yr and represents our good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of base salary at the time of posting. The actual salary offered may vary based on experience, qualifications, or other relevant factors.
